The
reductive processes of investigations in particle physics offer glimpses of
an arcane geometry of change, a geometry of transformation and matter decay.
A trace of an event, some billionths of a second in duration, is the starting
point for a new series of transformations. The same matter, in another form,
relives these journeys on a vastly amplified scale. Clouds of paint wash under
and over a tracery of drawing. The process of painting – of layering and
removal, of veiling and unveiling – is perhaps analogous to the magnification
of a microscope, simultaneously bringing into focus one level of matter while
another recedes. At every magnification there is the world, and one particular,
complex fleeting arrangement of it is thinking about itself.
